Registration is not legal ownership
NZTA records the registered person responsible for the vehicle, rather than deciding legal ownership. A sale agreement and payment records help document your transaction. Keep them alongside the registration confirmation.
Both parties must act
Buyer and seller must each notify NZTA straight away. Follow the official process for your side and retain confirmation. The buyer online service requires a New Zealand driver licence; without one, use an agent and confirm identification requirements first.
Check before leaving
Match the plate and VIN to the vehicle and paperwork. Record the date, price, identities and agreed conditions. Where a referral partner sells the car, identify that business in the agreement. Use official NZTA links rather than an intermediary adding unnecessary charges.
Official information and further reading
Requirements can change. Check the linked authority before completing paperwork or relying on a driving entitlement.
General information, not a vehicle inspection or confirmation of stock. Budget examples are planning figures. Current prices and availability must be confirmed.
