Stop safely
If an overheating warning appears, find a safe place to stop and follow the handbook. Switch off the engine when safe. Do not continue simply because home or a garage is close. Steam, a rising temperature gauge or coolant smell needs assessment.
Do not open a hot cooling system
Hot pressurised coolant can cause serious burns. Do not remove a radiator or pressurised reservoir cap while hot, and keep clear of steam and moving fans. Avoid adding random fluids or treating a top-up as proof the cause is fixed.
Describe the event
Record the warning, driving conditions and any visible leak from a safe distance. Arrange recovery or professional advice rather than attempting a roadside repair. Ask for the cause to be investigated before agreeing to use the car again.
