Use a fixed reference
In good conditions, allow at least two seconds behind the vehicle ahead. Start counting as its rear passes a fixed marker and finish before your front reaches it. If the gap is short, ease back smoothly rather than braking sharply.
Increase the gap
NZTA recommends at least four seconds in wet or slippery conditions or when towing. More room may be necessary when visibility or grip is especially poor. A heavy load and an unfamiliar vehicle are reasons to be more cautious.
Think beyond the vehicle ahead
Scan further up the road and leave space for changing traffic. If another driver follows too closely, avoid confrontation or brake-checking. Maintain a safe speed and let them pass where it is safe to do so.
