Repair an older car or replace it? A practical budget guide

Compare an itemised repair plan with the real costs of replacing a low-budget car.

ARM Cars editorial guide · Reviewed 3 November 2026

Start with a diagnosis

Ask what has been confirmed, what is still uncertain and whether the car is safe to use. An unexplained noise or warning is not enough to compare repair and replacement costs. Request an itemised quote or estimate and clarify whether further investigation may change the figure.

Separate urgent and later work

Ask the repairer to distinguish safety-critical faults, work needed before regular use and maintenance that can be planned. Do not postpone a safety repair solely to fit a budget. Include any known upcoming work so the decision is about the car’s likely needs, not just the cheapest immediate invoice.

Compare a replacement fairly

A different low-priced car can have unknown faults. Include an independent inspection, insurance changes, transport, servicing and any immediate repairs in the replacement budget. An asking price is not evidence of condition. Compare the inspected alternatives rather than assuming a newer-looking car will cost less to own.

Set a decision point with Raj

Tell Raj your available budget and how you rely on the car. Agree a diagnostic spending limit and contact method before additional work. Ask for the findings in writing so you can consider repair, replacement or a temporary transport arrangement without pressure. Browse the budget guides for dated market examples, then confirm current availability.
