Start with signs and signals
Obey traffic lights, stop signs, give-way signs and directions from authorised traffic controllers. Stop fully at a stop sign and proceed only when safe. Do not assume a driver approaching from another direction has the same control as you.
Understand the common cases
At a T-intersection, traffic on the terminating road gives way to the continuing road. Turning traffic generally gives way to traffic not turning; a right-turning vehicle gives way to an opposing left-turning vehicle when both face the same controls. Study the official examples for exceptions and marked centre lines.
Look for every road user
Check footpaths and cycle paths as well as traffic lanes, particularly when entering or leaving a driveway. Do not enter an intersection when the exit is blocked. If unsure, slow down and reassess rather than relying on another driver’s wave.
