Before starting the engine
Arrange a daylight viewing and ask to see the vehicle before it has been warmed up. Match the plate and VIN with the documents. Look for uneven panel gaps, corrosion, signs of water entry and inconsistent wear. These are prompts for an inspector, not proof of a particular fault.
Check the equipment you need
Try seats, belts, windows, locks, ventilation and lights while safely parked. Check that warning lights behave as the handbook describes. Make a written list of defects and ask which will be repaired before sale. Photograph issues with permission so you can compare vehicles later.
Leave specialist checks to an inspector
Request an independent report covering the particular vehicle. Do not crawl beneath a car held by a jack, touch hot components or open high-voltage covers. Review the report and repair estimates before committing.
Official information and further reading
